Smoking a cigarette
While smoking has it's obvious health risks, smoking a cigarette is often a common tactic people use to relax. Smoking however does have some positive effects if you can look past the risk of lung cancer, yellow teeth, and gum disease. Those who do smoke say that it is a "social event" where a group of friends will meet up in their usual spot, and approximately have 7 minutes to catch up and talk about their day.
Smoking can also act as a reward for the occasional smoker. The first cigarette in the morning and the last cigarette before going to bed are especially the most rewarding. In the morning, a person can enjoy a cigarette after they have gotten up, and prepared for their daily routine, deserving of a reward. The last cigarette at night is a reward for all of the tasks and things they have accomplished throughout the day. I myself am the occasional smoker and I like to think of it as after a long dayas my reward for accomplishing all the tasks I needed to for that day (i.e. going to all my classes, studying for an exam, patiently dealing with a situation in my sorority), I take a puff of my cigarette and as I blow out the smoke, I think of it as blowing out the stress of the day.
The act of smoking also helps with relaxation. A few minutes to linger after dinner, a relaxing walk around campus, or sitting down with friends outside of a building the act allows a few minutes to just stretch out your legs and relax.

There are so many better things a person could do for a social event or relaxation. Smoking is actually a major turn off for most people as well. The best thing you could do is to quit right away before it becomes a major problem in your life. Just imagine how much money you would save on not buying cigarettes. Also, you'll keep your skin looking nice and teeth white. Not only do you hurt yourself, but you also hurt those around you more with the 2nd and 3rd hand smoke. Kick the bad habit.
ReplyDeleteI feel like smoking marijuana (while illegal) would probably be much more relaxing than smoking a cigarette. Not that I would know from personal experience or anything, lol. Just a thought.
